The Boston Bruins win their 5th Victoria Cup! Congratulations to owner Howard Lee on his successful "Drive for Five"!

The Hokey News Boston, MA The Bruins win! The Bruins win! The most storied franchise in the TMHL has won their 5th Victoria Cup. This victory propels the Bruins ahead of arch-nenemis Ottawa Senators for most championships. The now defunct Portland Winterhawks are the only other team to win multiple Cups (2). Boston's record in the Victoria Cup is now 5-3. This was the second time Boston has appeared in three consecutive finals. The game was an exciting one despite the 7-3 outcome. Boston took an early lead staked by G Jocelyn Thibault but Las Vegas narrowed the gap with a brillant performance by G Roman Turek. The Bruins closed the game late with solid performances by D Ray Bourque, C Vincent Lecavalier and R Mats Sundin. The key was Thibault's outstanding performance, with his 13 points. Thibault was named as MVP for the playoffs, narrowly edging out longtime Bruin captain Ray Bourque. Bruin veterans chipped in to cement the victory led by Bourque's 6 points and then Sundin with 5. Las Vegas was again led by Turek with 14 points followed by C Alexei Zhamnov's 4. -----------------------------------------

End of the Regular Season!

Finally! We have: a) Playoff match-ups will be as follows: Lee Conference (1) Boston Bruins vs (8) Pickering Power Plant (2) Montreal Canadien vs (7) Pittsburgh Panthers (3) Quebec Nordiques vs (6) Hamilton Steelheads (4) Ottawa Senators vs (5) New York Rangers Low Conference (1) Philadelphia Flyers vs (8) San Antonio Crusaders (2) New York Islanders vs (7) Arizona Blades (3) Las Vegas Oddsmakers vs (6) Portland Winter Hawks (4) Edmonton Devils vs (5) San Francisco Earthquakes San Antonio took the last spot in the Low Conference when San Francisco beat Louisianna, their only competition for the spot. Pittsburgh claimed a spot in the Lee Conference with a win over the Leafs. Pickering eked out the last spot in the Lee Conference with tie against BC. No owner was shut-out in terms of playoff spots and Cosimo, Paul, Stephen, and Tom each had both their teams qualify. Congrats! b) President's Trophy Congratulations go to Leon & the Philadelphia Flyers! Their win, coupled with the Canadien's loss to Boston meant all three teams were tied at 30 points. The Flyers, however, had the most wins in the league with 14 and so win the President's Trophy for finishing first over-all in the standings. c) Division Titles In the three titles to be decided, the second place team going into the game came out on top! Philadelphia had already clinched the Mangos division, while Boston beat Montreal for all the "DiIorio cookies", Quebec crushed the Rangers for the "Tatone tattoo", and the Islanders be-deviled Edmonton to lead the Lim. Congrats to Leon, Howie, Carl & Massimo! d) Other stuff: 8 teams share in the bonus pool of $279.11, an average of about $34.88 each. Arizona wins $15 for most improved points per salary, with just over 26 pts/sal over their numbers from last year. The Islanders were next closest with just under 20. (Only 6 teams in total improved their numbers from last year). Stephen's done a great job with both his teams in his rookie season! Cosimo wins $25 for the owner with the best combined points per salary ratio, with a 48.7 figure. Tom was next at 44.77 followed closely by Wally at 44.69. BC misses the minimum point level by a half point. Ouch!

HOKEY NEWS Season Review

DiIorio Division Perennial sadsack BC Strikers missed the playoffs for the 4th time in 5 seasons. The team improved from last year but were penalized for the 2nd straight season for missing the minimum. The perennial powerhouse Boston Bruins won their 8th straight division title and their 9th overall to make the playoffs for the 13th straight season. It was also the 13th straight winning season for the team, who finished as the top ranked team. The Hamiton Steelheads posted franchise records for record, goals and points in recording their 1st winning season and 1st playoff berth in their 3 year history. The Pickering Power Plant started the season strong and barely held on to their final playoff position. The Montreal Canadien had their best season ever in their 8 year history. They posted 70 goals to finish rated 3rd despite losing their division on the last game. The powerhouse Ottawa Senators posted another winning season to finish in the playoffs for the 6th straight season. The team finished as the 2nd rated squad with 73 goals. Tatone Division The Montreal Beavers recorded their 1st losing season in their 14 year history. They also missed the playoffs for just the 2nd time, despite a spirited late season charge. The New York Rangers had their best season ever despite the letdown of losing the division crown on the last game. After a slow start, the Pittsburgh Panthers made the playoffs in dramatic fashion and forged their 2nd straight winning season and playoff berth. The Quebec Nordiques came off a slow start to forge their 9th division title. They also kept their 50 goal season perfect, never falling below that mark or missing the playoffs. Coming off 2 straight playoff berths and winning seasons, the Toronto Maple Leafs failed to finish in the playoffs and post a winning season, losing the last game of the year. The Woodbine Racers finished out of the playoffs for the 4th time in 5 seasons Mangos Division The Etobicoke Eagles endured their worst season ever. It was also their first losing season in their franchise history resulting in a missed playoff position. The Las Vegas Oddsmakers kept their 5 season winning streak plus playoff berth alive. Although the team dropped from last year's output they finish as the number two seed. The Louisiana Rebels improved their stats from the previous season. However, this once proud franchise saw its 4th straight losing season and 4th straight missed playoff opportunity. The North Bay Centennials had their 2nd worst season in franchsie history, scoring only 19 goals. This season marked the 4th time they missed the playoffs in 6 years. The Philadelphia Flyers took their 4th divisional crown but 1st League title. This marked the 3rd straight season the league titlist came from the Mangos division. The San Francisco Earthquakes have established themselves as the league's elite. This past season saw them extend their 500 point streak. They have never missed it. The team took also notched 50 goals for the 7th straight season earning their 5th straight playoff spot and their 5th straight winning season. Lim Division The defending Victoria Cup champion Edmonton Devils could not win their thrid straight division title but did post their 3rd straight 50 goal season and 3rd straight 500 point season. After a juggernaut-like start, the Arizona Blades squeaked into the playoffs. This season was the best in their 3 year history. The New York Islanders posted their best stats (goals & points) in their history while winning their 3 division title. The Portland Winter Hawks made the playoffs for the 3rd straight season raking up their best record since 88/89. The San Antonio Crusaders finished making the playoffs but marked their 11th straight losing season. Their output was the best since 88/89 though. The Tampa Bay Lightning missed the playoffs for the 6th time in 8 seasons, this season marked their worst winning percentage ever. -----------------------------------------
